Zips Takes Down Vikings 9-1 in 5 Innings
The Akron Zips defeated the Cleveland State Vikings 9-1 on a sunny March Monday afternoon. After defeating Northern Illinois in a 3 game sweep, the Zips continued their winning streak at home with a 5 inning mercy rule.
Junior 3rd Baseman Alexis Campbell led the Zips in the batter’s box, going 2 for 3 for 4 RBIs, while freshman 1st Baseman Sophia Wygast went 2 for 3 for 2 Runs and 2 RBIs and sophomore Outfielder Meagan Lee went 2 for 3 for 2 runs and an RBI. On the base running, sophomore 2nd Baseman Brooke Sivek stole 3 bases, while freshman Shortstop Delaney Jenkinson stole 2. For the Vikings, sophomore Outfielder Emma Gilkerson went 2 for 2, including a home run. On the mound, freshman Macy Walters (3-3) allowed 5 hits for a run while striking out 3 batters in 5 innings, while senior Torrie Jenkins (1-5) took the loss allowing 6 hits for 4 runs and striking out 3 in 2.1 innings.
Following the win, the Zips improved to a 14-15 record, while the Vikings fell to a 6-13 record.
