Lake Catholic's Winning Streak Continues with Decisive Kenston Takedown
Lake Catholic's Thursday night 49-14 win over Kenston wasn't just about the numbers on the scoreboard; it was about teamwork, strategy, and making every play count. Coach Marty Gibbons summed it up best: "We have just been getting better each week. We are playing a crisper brand of football, because of the work we are putting in and we are developing trust with each other." This wasn't just another game; it was a clear sign of a team on the rise, backed by a coach who believes in their potential every step of the way.
Frankie Trinetti, the junior quarterback for Lake Catholic, shone brightly in the Cougars’ fourth consecutive victory. Completing 14 of his 18 passes, he threw for 302 yards and four touchdowns. With this performance, Trinetti has now accumulated a total of 1,482 yards and 20 touchdowns this season. "I couldn't be playing like this if it weren't for the guys next to me on both sides of the ball," said Trinetti, reflecting on his success. He further emphasized the importance of his teammates, stating, "It just helps that everyone around me does their job and helps me out by doing that."
DJ Sears, another standout player for Lake Catholic, continued his impressive streak by scoring four touchdowns for the second week in a row. Sears caught three touchdown passes and added another with a rushing touchdown. When asked about his recent success, Sears humbly responded, "I don’t think too much about it. I play one week at a time, move on, and focus on our next opponent." He also praised Coach Marty Gibbons for his play-calling, attributing a significant portion of his success to the coach's strategies.
Lake Catholic's defense effectively stopped Kenston's top running back, Sean Patrick. While Kenston started strong, an interception by Lake's Ace Peterlin shifted the momentum in Lake Catholic's favor. The scoring summary paints a clear picture of Lake Catholic's dominance:
First Quarter: DJ Sears scored with a 2-yard touchdown run, followed by a 76-yard touchdown pass from Trinetti to Cross Nimmo.
Second Quarter: Kenston's Sean Patrick scored a short touchdown run, but Lake Catholic responded with three touchdowns, including a pick-six by Jimmy Rhodes.
Third Quarter: Josh Styles' 76-yard run and Trinetti's 45-yard pass to Sears further solidified Lake Catholic's lead.
Fourth Quarter: Kenston's Cohen Clark added a touchdown, but it was too little, too late.
Coach Marty Gibbons, reflecting on the team's performance, remarked, "We have a ton of great players. It is exciting to see who is going to express their ability each week. Fortunately, we also have a relentless distributor of the football in Frankie and an offensive line that’s really getting better as well."
With this victory under their belt, Lake Catholic (4-1) is gearing up to face Canton Central Catholic (3-2) in week 6, while Kenston prepares for a Western Reserve Conference opener against Chardon (3-2). Both teams will be eager to bounce back from their week 5 losses.
