Just two weeks into his professional career, former Youngstown State University Star Running Back Jaleel McLaughlin made a statement by scoring his first touchdown on his very first carry. A 5-yard dash into the end zone that signaled the arrival of a new force in the Broncos' backfield. But that was just the beginning. This past Sunday, McLaughlin showcased his versatility, catching an 18-yard screen pass that gave the Broncos an early lead against the Chicago Bears.
However, the game wasn't all smooth sailing for Denver. The Bears retaliated with a vengeance, racking up 28 unanswered points. With the scoreboard reading 28-7 in favor of Chicago late in the third quarter, things looked bleak for the Broncos. But, as they say, it's not over until it's over. The Broncos, with McLaughlin playing a pivotal role, orchestrated a comeback for the ages, clinching their first victory of the season with a 31-28 win.
With star running back Javonte Williams sidelined due to a hip injury, McLaughlin seized the opportunity. He amassed an impressive 104 yards in total - 72 on the ground from just seven carries and another 32 through the air from three receptions.
However, Broncos' head coach Sean Payton is approaching McLaughlin's increased involvement with a measure of caution. Reflecting on the game, Payton remarked, “The trick is -- he’s done a ton of good things -- but, man, there’s some things I don’t want to get caught with a mismatch and it happened in the first half when he’s blocking a bigger linebacker. So, you’re having to manage that relative to when he’s in and when he’s not. He was outstanding. (He is) hard to tackle, good in space, made the screen for a touchdown.’’
McLaughlin's journey to the NFL is the stuff of legends. From his college days at Notre Dame College in Cleveland to Youngstown State University, he has consistently defied expectations. With a jaw-dropping 8,166 yards on 1,250 attempts and 79 touchdowns, McLaughlin has firmly etched his name in the NCAA history books as the All-Time leading rusher. And while he may have entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent, his undeniable talent and stellar performances during camp and the preseason ensured his place on the Broncos' 53-man roster.
As the season progresses, many more eyes will be on McLaughlin. If his early performances are any indication, the Broncos may have found their next big star.
