Flying High: Ashland Eagles Women's Basketball Wins Third National Championship
The Ashland Eagles women's basketball team made history this season by winning their third NCAA Division II National Championship. Led by Head Coach Kari Pickens, who has now won three national titles with the program (one as a player - 2013, one as an assistant coach - 2017, and one as head coach - 2023), the Eagles finished with an undefeated record of 37-0.
Ashland has been a powerhouse in Division II women's basketball for more than a decade, with an incredible overall record of 359-39 (.902) since the 2011-12 season. The team has won nine conference tournament titles, made five national championship game appearances, and won three national championships in that span. This level of sustained excellence is a testament to the culture of the program, the leadership of Coach Pickens, and the commitment of the players.
In the national championship game against Minnesota Duluth, the Eagles faced a formidable opponent led by the national Player of the Year, Brooke Olson. However, Ashland's depth and balance proved to be too much for the Bulldogs to handle. Senior Guard Annie Roshak was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament after putting up impressive numbers throughout the NCAA tournament, including a strong performance in the championship game with 20 points, 13 rebounds, and four assists. Sophomore forward Zoe Miller scored 16 points, followed by fellow sophomore forward Hayley Smith with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and guard Hallie Heidemann with 11 points. The trio's strong performances contributed to the team's victory, showcasing their depth and talent.
The win not only secured Ashland's place in Division II women's basketball history, but it also cemented their legacy as one of the greatest programs of all time. With a 37-game winning streak that ties for seventh-best in Division II history, the Eagles have established themselves as a force to be reckoned with. The team's success this season was a true team effort, with multiple players stepping up throughout the year to contribute to the team's success.
Looking ahead, the future looks bright for the Ashland Eagles women's basketball program. With Coach Pickens at the helm and a winning culture established, the team will undoubtedly continue to be a dominant force in Division II for years to come.
The significance of Ashland's win in Division II women's basketball cannot be overstated. This season's success was a testament to the team's collective effort, with each player stepping up and contributing in their own way. As a result, the team's legacy will endure as a testament to the power of teamwork and dedication.
