Jackson and Perry Dances to District Finals for Federal League Rematch
The 2023 OHSAA Girls Volleyball Tournament is slowly coming to an end, with remaining teams slowly decreasing. On October 24, it’s District Semifinals for Division I Northeast 3 at Hudson High School in Hudson, Ohio hosting back to back matchups.
Jackson Continues Dominance over Hoover to Advance to District Finals
The first matchup consisted of the visiting #17 seed Hoover Vikings and the heavily favored #1 seed Jackson Polar Bears. The Vikings are coming off their 3-1 victory over GlenOak, while the Polar Bears are coming off their dominant 3-0 victory over Harding.
The Polar Bears defeated the Vikings 3-0 (25-8, 25-16, 25-18) to secure their spot back to the District Finals for the 14th consecutive season, a streak started back in 2009.
The Polar Bears finished the night with 30 total kills led by Junior Abbey Debevec’s 8 from the air. Senior Setter Camden Dolan racked up 15 assists and Debevec served 5 aces. On the defensive front, Junior Libero Haylee Wenner led with 7 digs on the night, while Junior Middle Blockers Khalia-Leigh James and Alexa Mast racked up 2 blocks a piece.
The Vikings finished the night with 9 kills, led by Sophomore Audrey Ellis’s 4, while also contributing 2 aces and 2 blocks. Senior Setter Brooklyn Griffiths dished out 9 assists while Senior Elle Fuciu totaled 8 digs and Junior Izzy Bugara had 15 receptions.
The Polar Bears will play the #8 seed Massillon Perry for a chance to advance to Regional Semifinals against the winner of the Northeast 2 bracket.
Massillon Perry Routs Walsh Jesuit Home to Advance to District Final
The following matchup commenced between the visiting #14 seed Walsh Jesuit Warriors and the #8 seed Massillon Perry Panthers. Walsh Jesuit is coming off their 3-2 victory over Willoughby South, while Perry is coming off a dominant 3-0 victory against Hudson in the Sectional Finals.
The Panthers defeated the Warriors 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-17, 25-17), to secure their spot in the District Finals for the first time since 2021.
On the offensive, the Panthers finished the night with 36 total kills, led by Senior Emma Weirich’s 12, while Senior Setter Sarah Mohr racked up 28 assists. While on the defensive side Senior Libero Hope Miller racked up 13 digs and Sophomore Elaine Laubaucher led the night with 5 blocks.
The Warriors finished the night with 40 total kills, led by Senior Katherine Trzcinskiup’s 13 and 40 assists led Freshman Sophia Trzcinski and Sophomore Avery Piersail combining for 36. While on the defensive, Junior Bridget Sloan led the night with 18 digs and 33 receptions, with Freshman Sydney Pesut racking up 3 blocks.
The Panthers will play the #1 seed Jackson Polar Bears for a Federal League rematch and a chance to advance to Regional Semifinals for the first time since 2021.
