Copley and Beaumont upsets to advance to District Final
On a warm Wednesday evening, it’s District Semifinals for Division II Northeast 4 at Tallmadge High School in Tallmadge, Ohio hosting back to back matchups.
Copley upsets CVCA to advance to District Final
The first matchup between the visiting #6 seed Copley Indians and the #3 seed CVCA Royals were anything but expected. Copley was coming off their brutal 3-2 victory over Hawken, while CVCA was coming off their 3-0 victory over Coventry.
Copley completed the upset over CVCA in a full 3-0 sweep (25-12, 25-20, 25-10) to secure their spot in the District Final for the first time since 2012.
On the offensive, the Indians finished the night with 32 kills, led by Senior OH Katey Firestine’s 11, while Sophomore Setter Annie Quinian racked up 19 assists and Senior Alexa Strandberg served 8 aces. On the defensive, Firestine and Strandberg racked up 9 digs a piece, while Strandberg led with 2 blocks.
The Royals finished the night with 18 kills, led by Freshman Mariah Howell’s 5 kills, while Senior Bria Bucciarelli and Freshman Emily Darr finished with 4 kills. Junior Reese Donahoe dished out 13 assists, while Sophomore Eva Durant served a team-high 3 aces. On the defensive, Junior Hallie Hendricks racked up 10 digs, Junior Elizabeth Fisher received 11 serves, and 2 blocks shared by Durant and Darr.
With the upset victory, the Indians will advance to the District Final for a chance to advance to the Regional Semifinal.
Beaumont dominates over Elyria Catholic to advance to District Final
The following matchup commenced between the visiting #8 Beaumont Blue Streaks and the #4 seed Elyria Catholic Panthers. The Blue Streaks were coming off their 3-0 victory over Brookside, while the Panthers were coming off their 3-0 victory over Tallmadge.
The Blue Streaks upsetted the Panthers 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-17) to complete the full sweep to advance to the District Final for the first time since 2021.
The Blue Streaks finished the night with 42 kills, led by Junior Aria Payne’s 17 kills, Junior Tori Brown’s 9 and Sophomore Maryclare Holzheimer’s 6. Senior setter Quinnie Van de Walle dished out 32 assists and chipped in five kills of her own to go with a team-high five aces and eight digs. Senior libero Lucy Salata had 21 digs to go with four assists, while Junior Maggi Trickett was credited with nine digs and a pair of assists.
The Panthers finished the night with 19 kills, led by Senior Peyton Essenmacher’s 7 kills, Senior Isabella Niederst’s 5, and Freshman Ella Feskanich’s 4, while Freshman Jessica Connor racked up 18 assists and 6 digs on the night. On the defensive, Senior Catherine Muzilla led a team-high 19 digs and 32 receptions, while Feskanich had a team-high 4 blocks.
The Blue Streaks will take on the Indians of Copley for the Northeast 4 District and a ticket to the Regional Tournament at Alliance High School.
