About the Greynolds Classic:
The K. Jack Greynolds Memorial Classic honors the legendary Barberton Magics basketball coach Jack Greynolds who died in 2005. Proceeds from the event go to the Lake Anna YMCA, Magic City Kiwanis, the Barberton Public Schools and the Larry Bidlingmyer Outdoor Education Fund for youth programs and equipment as well as stroke awareness education. In the past seventeen years, the Greynolds Classic has raised over $250,000. Teams such as Barberton, Hoban, Firestone, Norwayne, Chippewa, Woodridge, Cuyahoga Falls, St. Vincent St. Mary, Hoover, Green, GlenOak, and many more have competed in this Classic since its 1st annual Classic in 2005.
Lady Magics Holds off Springfield’s Late Comeback 44-40
The Lady Magics of Barberton secured their first win of the season over Arkon Springfield 44-40. The Magics managed to outlast the Spartans late 4th quarter comeback after entering the 4th down 37-27. Magics Head Coach Ken Rector also tied the Magics’ All-Time Coaching wins record at Barberton with 347, tying the former Lady Magics’ Head Coach Jeff Janiga (347-100). Lady Magics’ Guard Kya Witwer earned Barberton’s MVP honors with her 19 point performance. Guard Taylor Miller contributed with 8 points, while Guard Alexys Anzaldi added 7 points. Lady Spartans Guard Kendall Wilderman earned MVP honors for Springfield with her 20 point performance, while Forward Destiny Ruggiero added 7 points.
Cuyahoga Heights Never Looks Back in 54-36 Victory over Chippewa
The Cuyahoga Heights Red Wolves, led by MVP honors Cade Davies secured their 3rd win of the season over Chippewa in the Greynolds Classic. Davies finished the night with a team-high 19 points, with Forward Kyle Porter adding 10 points and Guard Braylan McClardy contributing 9 points. Chippewa Center Tillman Brown earned MVP honors for the Chipps with his 17 point performance. Guard Brendan Donnelly also contributed with 8 points.
Norwayne’s Defense Shuts Down Ellet 73-44
Thanks to their full court press defense, the Norwayne Bobcats cruised their way to their 3rd straight win of the season over the Ellet Orangemen 73-44. Guard Parker Metsker earned MVP honors for the Bobcats with a 14 point performance, while Guard Beau Polen contributed with 16 points. Guard Tyson Hess also added his 13 points to the dominating victory. Guard Uriah Young earned MVP honors for the Orangemen with his 12 point performance.
Hoban Continues Dominance in 60-36 Win over Firestone
The 2022 OHSAA Division I State Champions Archbishop Hoban Knights kicked off their season with a 60-36 victory over the Firestone Falcons, immediately picking up where they left off from the previous season. Kent State commit Guard Jonas Nichols earned MVP honors for the knights with a 17 point performance, while Forward Joey Hardman finished with 15 points. Falcons Guard Lamar Dampier earned MVP honors with 17 points, while Forward Johnathan White added 6 points.
Barberton Snaps Losing Streak over Rootstown 65-22
The Barberton Magics boys basketball team snapped their 25-game losing streak with a 65-22 victory over the Rootstown Rovers to conclude the 2023 Greynolds Classic. The Magics, who hasn’t won a game since February 11, 2022, finally tasted victory over the visiting Rovers. Kicking off the game up 34-6 at halftime, the Magics kept the foot on the gas pedal the entire 32 minutes of play, forcing a running clock by the 4th quarter. Forward De’Arion Holley earned MVP honors for the Magics after a 15 point performance, while Guard Kameryn Kennerly contributed with 12 points. Forward Cameron Mahone earned MVP honors for the Rovers with 10 points on the night.
